Becoming a mentor

• Professors, private lecturers and postdocs from the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology
• We welcome mentors of all genders.

As a ARIADNEphil mentor, you

• advise one female early career researcher on academic qualifications and careers based on your experience,
• share “informal knowledge”, i.e. you provide insight into the rules of the game and working cultures at the university,
• encourage networking and facilitate new contacts,
• support your mentee with constructive feedback, help to specify goals and point out opportunities to realize them.

In order to fulfill these tasks well, mentors should have the following qualities:

• professional and life experience in the areas relevant to the mentee
• openness and willingness to pass on experience
• appropriate availability for mentoring the mentee
• interest in the mentee’s career planning
• a functioning network of contacts (“door opener”)
• discretion.

By taking on a mentorship, you

• expand your own network and help the mentee to build hers.
• get to know the university from a new perspective.
