ARIADNEmed/medPEER
FAUmentoring ARIADNEmed is part of the FAU’s ARIADNE-program and is an equal opportunities measure as part of the target agreements to increase the proportion of women in science, which the university management, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital jointly agreed for the first time in 2008.
ARIADNEmed supports and accompanies female doctors as well as research assistants with a doctorate from the Faculty of Medicine at FAU and the University Hospital Erlangen individually in their academic careers. With its combination of individual mentoring advice and interdisciplinary skills seminars, ARIADNEmed is the ideal offer for young female academics who are interested in an academic career and want to further develop their personal skills.
Due to the excellent experience with ARIADNEmedPEER for the promotion of young female scientists, ARIADNEmedPEER was added to the funding spectrum from fall 2023.
The aim of the new program line is to systematically support female habilitated researchers from the Faculty of Medicine at FAU and the University Hospital Erlangen-Nuremberg in their interdisciplinary/personal skills development during the transition phase to an appointment/professorship and to increase their ability to be appointed.
Mentoring is a very effective instrument for promoting the academic careers of young female academics. It involves a person with career experience (mentor) advising a young female researcher (mentee) on strategic and practical issues relating to an academic career. The aim of the advice is to support, motivate and qualify the mentee in the planning and development of her academic career and to impart knowledge about structures, processes and rules in the academic world.
The ARIADNEmed program offers high-potential female early career researchers (postdoctoral and habilitation candidates) individual mentoring advice as well as seminars on personal and interdisciplinary skills development. Gegenstand der individuellen Beratung sind Fragen der Laufbahnplanung und der Umsetzung konkreter Karriereschritte. Network meetings provide additional exchange and transfer of experience that extend beyond the program duration of one and a half years.
The special achievement of the ARIADNEmed programs lies in their faculty-specific orientation: The ARIADNE program carefully takes into account the subject culture and the specific requirements for academic careers and career paths in medicine with its seminar offerings.
The ARIADNEmed mentoring program is part of the target agreements to increase the proportion of women in science, which the university management, the Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital have jointly agreed.
ARIADNEmed is a member of Forum Mentoring e.V. and works strictly according to the quality standards formulated by the nationwide professional association for good mentoring practice at universities.
As a university equality measure, the ARIADNEmed program has received a lot of attention – especially from the German Research Foundation, which lists the ARIADNEmed program in its toolbox for exemplary equality measures.
Responsible for the program are the Women’s Representatives of the Faculty of Medicine.
Mentoring advice is combined with a top-class seminar program on career-relevant topics, such as research funding, leadership skills in everyday clinical and academic life, time and resource management, publication strategies or academic communication. The seminars usually take place in a face-to-face format.
The seminar program is accompanied by regular network meetings. These offer the mentee the opportunity to exchange ideas with other mentees and thus enable the establishment and expansion of informal and academic networks.
